photojournalism preview

Explain what kind of planning and research the photographer had to do to get the photos they took.

The photographer of this photograph had to research what routes immigrants take in the passage across the border from Serbia to Hungary.

The photographer had to plan ahead and make sure migrants took the route he chose to photograph at and make sure he was there with plenty of time to catch migrant en-route to the train station, hours or so before the planned departure of the train.

The photographer of this photo had to research the times of the train arrival or departure for this photograph, and had to plan to be there on time in order to capture theses photos of immigrants waiting to load, or coming off the train.

Shooting Like A Photojournalist

Under the section on "Planning," what does the writer suggest doing to capture emotional images?
Knowing what type of emotions correlate with the event, will help you to look for these types of emotion and capture it in your photos.

Under the section on "Composition," what does the writer suggest doing to help you "pick a face out of the crowd?"

When choosing a face out of the crowd, or choosing an individual who has a particular outfit that stands out and would create a good focal point for your photo.

Photo Essay Tips

What is a photo essay?

A photo essay is a collection of images that are placed in a specific order to show the progression of events, in a story like form.

Summarize the 5 tips the writer provides.

  • Choose a topic that you have an interest in
  • Do your research on the event- find out all you can about the subject you will be shooting
  • After researching the subject/event shoot from an angle that will best capture its uniqueness
  • Capture the emotion of the subject/event to truly tie the story together
  • Plan what shots you will take, walk through the venue in your head and see how each of your photos will tell a different part of the story

Look for upcoming events anywhere and everywhere.
